Standard Probe Tips / Needles
Contacting a trace on a PCB or a (Semiconductor)Substrate does not always require ultimate mechanical precision or superb electrical performance. Sometimes it is footprint or simply budget governing the situation.
Here is a list of standard probe tips/needles:

As a rule-of-thumb Tungsten is the most attractive probe tip/needle material. Needles are available with lots of different tip radii – ranging from very sharp (a small tip radius) to almost blunt (a very big tip radius). The tip radius determines how comfortable you can land on a specific feature (e.g. a pad or a line) and also how much current you can push into that contact.
Tungsten is quite soft and probe tips can be bent into custom shapes for example to circumvent obstacles such as microscope objectives. Tungsten Carbide on the other hand is very hard. Probe tips made of Tungsten Carbide easily scratch through the oxide on aluminum pads. Treated with care these needles last longer.
